Update from our weekly performance workshops
We caught up with playwright Lewis Hetherington, writer of our Christmas show Rumpelstiltskin, which starts at Platform on Tuesday 3 December.
This is Lewis’s 9th Christmas show for Platform - and it's a goody! Past shows including Goldilocks, Red Riding Hood, Three Little Pigs, Puss in Boots, Rapunzel, Mother Goose fae Easterhoose, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.
Rumpelstiltskin runs from Tue 3 – Tue 24 December 2024 and is family friendly with day and evening performances. Tickets are on sale now - book here.
What made you choose Rumpelstiltskin for this year’s show?
“I was excited to write about Rumpelstiltskin as he's a bit of a mystery, I've always wondered, who is this strange creature? Where does he come from? And what's he up to!?! I think he sometimes gets a bit of a bad rap, so I was interested in imagining - what is his backstory, what made him who he is?”
What can audiences expect?
“It's definitely a very original take, we start with Rumpelstiltskin at school, trying to make pals, dealing with all the highs and lows of that. And then it all becomes a bit epic, and we follow him gaining his powers, having adventures, and ultimately trying to find his place in the world, and who to share it with.”
Tell us more about the characters…
“Rumpelstiltskin - of course! But also his best pal at school Bunnyflops. She has QUITE the journey let me tell you. And then, Duncan MacWoof, Prince of the Kingdom and a bit of a plonker, is always getting in the way of things. Then there's lots of other colourful characters who pop up; a Glaikit Snake, Doctor Goat and the Northern Lights - magical creatures who help Rumpelstiltskin get up to mischief."
Any surprises to look out for?
"Now that would be telling! But I will say, there are lots of surprises along the way: betrayal, intrigue, romance...! And also - a lot of people think that Rumpelstiltskin is a bit of a rascal, but in this version you'll see that he's always only ever trying to do his best. Even if sometimes it goes a bit wrong…
“There are scenes in school and in the palace at the North Pole. The set is looking beautiful and festive - and it'll really take you on a wild ride. And of course there is our signature mix of pop classics from the 80's, 90's and more... Human League, Snap, and of course we end with a stone cold Christmas classic!"
Why should people come and see it this Christmas?
“Because you'll have a great time! It's exciting, fast paced and full of intrigue. I've had fun writing it, so I think audiences will have fun watching the story unfold. It's full of Christmas cheer and there's things to make you laugh, maybe even shed a tear, and get you boogeying in your seat."
