East End Portraits opens at Platform

26 May 2023

East End Portraits, a new exhibition inspired by the community and people of Easterhouse and surrounding areas, features portraits by artists Saskia Coulson and Colin Tennant.

Displayed on the Platform exhibition wall until August 19 2023, the collection of photographs of local people and community groups were taken in-between periods of lockdown in 2021.

Some groups included in the exhibition are The Denmilne Action Group who were formed during lockdown by local residents looking to clear litter and improve public spaces, The Glenburn Centre which offers invaluable free resources and support to young people and The Ruchazie Pantry who provide a food service, emotional support, and assistance back into the workplace.

One portrait of a staff member - Heather (first image) at Ruchazie Pantry was recently selected as a winner of the prestigious 2023 British Journal of Photography Award.

The UK's biggest annual photography exhibition, Portrait of Britain ‘celebrates the identity of a changing nation’ - a fitting accolade for the artists and their subjects. The portrait is also included in the Portrait of Britain publication, which aims to celebrate the diversity of a changing nation.

Coulson & Tennant also met up with participants of Platform's Taking Part groups - which were running online due to restrictions - these included participants from Platform Singers, Art Factory, music lessons, Nu Gen: Teen Art Group and Clack and Yak: Knitting Group.

Saskia Coulson: "During lockdown, we found out about the online programmes delivered by Platform that were helping keep people connected.

"When some restrictions started to lift, we were given the opportunity to go and meet some of the people involved in these projects and take their portraits. From there we made our own personal connections and started chatting to other groups and organisations.

“These communities welcomed us into their network and kindly let us document their events and photograph the people involved. We are very grateful to those who gave their time and allowed us to document their lives”.

East End Portraits runs at Platform, Mondays to Saturdays, 10am-5pm, until Saturday 19 August 2023. Admission is free and drop in/no need to book.
