Taking Part 2023 round up

19 Dec 2023

What a year for our Taking Part programme! It's been wonderful to welcome so many participants - lots of regulars and new faces alike - along to our various classes, workshops and activities.

Thank you to everyone who has attended, supported and donated, all enabling us to continue to expand and widen our programme.

Our classes are taking a break for the festive period and will return w/c Mon 22 Jan 2024 with a new block. Read more / book into the new sessions here.

We take a look at activities that some of our groups have been doing in and outwith their weekly sessions over the past year….

As well as singing to the crowds at The Bridge Family Festival, the Platform Singers group brought some festive spirit to our Full House Bingo recently. Taking us on a journey to Hawaii and Spain - and a few places in-between - with their songs, including the wonderful Ukrainian Carol of the Bell, there was lots of Christmas cheer to go round! Rachel Hynes, our Choir Leader, even brought her Kazoo!

At the event there was also a colourful display of work from Art Factory of printed textiles and banners hanging for guests to see. Print Clan, who run a weekly screen printing club at the Art Factory group, have been working with the participants over the last 6 months on various screen-printing techniques and methods.

Students from some of our music lessons - guitar and fiddle - got together in December for a jam session in our Studio Theatre. Everyone enjoyed some good music and it was an opportunity for those at various levels -  from beginners to improvers - to meet up and share their music.

Play Cafe and Saturday Art Club have continued to be busy on Saturdays, and it's been brilliant to see so many families attending the classes and enjoying creative activities. With artists changing weekly, activities vary and there is often seasonal themes - such as Easter, Halloween and Christmas activities - to get involved in.

From Halloween sensory sessions involving messy play, a panto themed Play Cafe - with a fancy dress box, puppet making and a photo booth with Christmas props from artist Rebecca Fraser to a focus on Christmas crafting to create a miniature festive feast using paper, pens and modelling clay for Saturday Art Club, there's always something different and creative going on!

As well as all their other lovely knits, the Clack and Yak knitting group got busy knitting cosy free hats for kids - available in the Platform Cafe Bar for collection. They also displayed and sold some of their work at The Bridge Family Festival day in the summer.

Earlier this year our Thursday Night Drama group shared their work-in-progress piece ‘People Dancing’ to a full house at our Made in Easterhouse multi-arts festival. Directed by Thursday Night Drama leader Eoin McKenzie, the music, the dancing and the whole uplifting performance had the audience itching to get on the dancefloor and join in. Read more here.

Nu Gen, our Tuesday night art class for teens are busy each week getting creative and trying new techniques - and were experimenting with stop motion animation….

Last but not least, the Monday Night Drama group for 8-16yrs have been busy getting spooky in a newly created sharing of their work - Jumpscares and Nightmares! Check out the video and we hope you don't get too frightened….
