Stories of resilience and community spirit in Easterhouse and surrounding communities are captured in this series of photographs by artists Saskia Coulson and Colin Tennant.
Featuring a collection of photographs of local people and community groups, which were taken in-between periods of lockdown in 2021, printed large-scale portraits shot on an analogue camera using medium format film, as well as multiple digital prints, form two groups of artworks spread across the exhibition wall at Platform. These document the community’s efforts to improve and flourish in their local area and capture individuals’ sense of pride in their initiatives.
The photograph in a shop/pantry setting was selected as a winner of the 2023 British Journal of Photography's ‘Portrait of Britain’ award. In the image, a volunteer helps restock at the Ruchazie Pantry, a community member shop that provides high quality, low cost food.
The portrait was displayed as part of the UK’s biggest annual photography exhibition which sees 100 winning portraits exhibited across the UK in a month long digital screen display in partnership with JC Decaux. It is also published in a new Portrait of Britain book - aimed at celebrating the diversity of a changing nation. See it at Platform until August 26 2023!
