Join us for the unveiling of a new sculpture - The Brolly - by Maria Gondek here in our Studio Theatre at Platform.
This event marks the culmination of a unique collaboration between Sculpture Placement Group, Platform and Blairtummock Housing Association. Following an open call, Glasgow-based artist Gondek was selected to undertake the commission resulting in the creation of a new sculpture that has a dual purpose. It is exhibited at Platform throughout the month of July before it is sited permanently in a public location in Easterhouse, facilitated by Blairtummock Housing Association.
Maria Gondek's artistic practice is deeply attuned to their surroundings, reflecting the historical narratives and social implications embedded within them. Her installations bridge the realms of DIY engineering and life-hack phenomenology - they possess a unique aliveness that invites viewers to become active participants in the experience.
With a touch of humour, these installations foster a mutual sympathy and coexistence between the artwork and the viewer.
The Brolly draws on this humour, delight and interconnected depth of understanding of people and place. Its ingenious design, specially tailored to both the Platform gallery context and the works' future home in nearby residential grounds, collects rainwater on the top tier, simulating the flow of a fountain and creating an immersive sensory encounter through the refraction of light.
It’s both playful and thoughtfully integrated into whichever environment it is in, and whatever the weather conditions are.
Come and join us on opening day to celebrate this new and unique community project! Drop in, free admission - everyone is welcome.
