Helen de Main: You Know, Things Like That

Over the past year, Helen has been meeting with a group of local women at Platform. Brenda, Foxy, Isabelle, Jean, Lorna, Mags and Margaret are all members of the Platform knitting group, who meet weekly to work on collective and individual knitting projects.

Inspired by the Consciousness Raising groups that emerged from the Women’s Movement in the 1960s, Helen instigated a series of open discussions with the group. These took on various themes as their starting point from which conversations opened out and expanded. The women shared thoughts on education and work / housework, as well as reflecting on experiences of being daughters, sisters, wives, mothers and grandmothers.

Additional info

Foxy, one of the woman who took part, said a few words on the project:

“It’s been great meeting Helen and being part of the group conversations. Despite our different ages and backgrounds, it was apparent that we’ve all faced common issues and that in some respects, not much has really changed for women throughout recent decades.

“I also had the opportunity to visit Helen in Glasgow Print Studio and help her to print some of the images. It was amazing to watch the process and see the work come to life… who knew some old childhood photos could be made into something so beautiful.”
