Only five films have been made in Cape Verde in the past fifty years, and 2016 marks the sixth film to come out of the small island off the northwest coast of Africa with the film Atlantic Heart, directed by local filmmaker Robbie McCallum (originally from Govanhill, Glasgow). The coming of age film Atlantic Heart sets itself against the colourful yet chaotic backdrop of the Mardi Gras Carnaval, where teenage siblings Lucas and Telma struggle to survive the seedier side of island life and hold on to their innocence and their dreams.

McCallum’s first feature film takes viewers on a visually impressive journey full of colorful costumes, beautiful beaches, as well as bars, bordellos, and back streets, exposing the harsher realities of island life.
