Platform is delighted to present a new exhibition bringing together drawings and paintings by award-winning filmmaker and visual artist Henry Coombes and collaborator, Marcella McIntosh, alongside Henry’s film Love and Lithium.
Henry, who is now better known for creating films that are by turn both intense and tender has continued to create paintings, drawing and sculpture, each art form responding to and influencing the other. Creative force Marcella has featured in a number of Henry’s films, in particular his most recent film Love and Lithium, which was the starting point for this exhibition.
The film is a documentary portrait of Marcella, exploring her life in her own words, through staged re-enactments and her drawings, the film focuses on Marcella’s recovery from alcohol addiction and mental health challenges. Marcella’s drawings are a direct result of Henry’s request for her to draw significant moments and people from her story, resulting in a series of images depicting these characters and moments. Alongside Marcella’s drawings are a selection of Henry’s paintings that similarly create a narrative of moments and experiences where the lines between myth, personal and fact are blurred.
