Jessica Ramm: Personal Structures

Daily
All ages

Jessica Ramm has created a new body of work that is informed by and responds to our setting: our architecture, partnerships, history and people. Working closely with Platform, Ramm reflects upon the emotional effects of the spaces we live and work in, presenting performances and sculptures that explore the possibilities of ‘home-made’ architecture as an aesthetic and political statement.

The construction processes Ramm uses are informed by her experience of growing up in an 80’s squatting community with a radical DIY ethos. For GI 2018 she is presenting a series of temporary structures that will occupy and respond to the architecture of Platform.

Working at Platform, Ramm has immersed herself in the building and its community exploring the architecture and local history. Ramm’s process has developed and focused in response to the environment and has been influenced by Easterhouse’s collective legacy of grassroots social change with local housing going through multiple stages of re-development.

Developed in the run up to the festival through a programme of workshops and events by Ramm, the temporary structures at Platform present new versions of familiar domestic spaces; restaging an urban environment.

In developing the work, Ramm has created an open dialogue with participants from Platform’s Taking Part programme exploring the emotional effects of the spaces we inhabit. These participants have worked together with Ramm to produce refashioned architectural materials using homemade tools and techniques that imitate industrial production technology.
