Her Majesty - The Queen of Mbira – trailblazer - kicker in of doors and one of the most outstanding musicians Zimbabwe has produced – Stella Chiweshe is an institution. Stella plays the mbira, an instrument that consists of 22 to 28 metal keys mounted on a hardwood soundboard, and is usually placed inside a gourd resonator. Growing up in Zimbabwe she was drawn towards the Mbira, a calling that was met with extreme opposition from both women and men alike. Mbira music was a male domain and it was considered “loose” for a woman to play. Undaunted by social conventions Stella continued her musical education and today is considered the country’s foremost player.

Stella has toured all over the world playing this intensely spiritual music and remains a constant positive force in Zimbabwe. Stella has organised the country’s International Woman’s Music Festival and is currently involved in an ambitious project to build a cultural centre.

Join us at Platform for this rare opportunity to witness one of Africa’s greatest living musicians.
